Perky Spring Plant Trends We’re Loving (and How to Try Them at Home)

It's time to get excited. Winter is over and, boy, wasn't it a wet one (especially for Australia's eastern seaboard)?! Warmer days are on their way with the arrival of Spring and we are here for it, along with every green thumb in Australia no doubt!

The days are becoming longer, the light getting brighter, and your pot plant jungle has starting stretching, unfurling, and begging for more room to shine. It’s also the perfect time to freshen up your plant styling game. And this year we’re seeing a lean towards bold styles with smart care habits.

We've searched the trends coming out of Europe and North America's Spring/Summer  season, as well as the 2025 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in March, for the best ideas in what’s hot in plant-filled homes right now.

1. The 'Statement' Pot

Gone are the days when your only options were terracotta or “whatever’s cheap at Bunnings.” This spring, pots are making just as much of a statement as the plants they hold — think sculptural shapes, bold colours and textured finishes. Rough, artisanal textures make any space feel more organic, while ribs designs offer a streamlined, timeless style that brings interest. Mix and match pot designs to personalise it to your home, office and outdoor space.

2. Grouped Plant Vignettes

Instead of scattering plants around your home, gather them into little leafy communities. Not only does it create a lush, layered look, but placing plants together helps raise humidity naturally — which your tropical plants will love. Odd numbers such as three and five are favoured by interior designers for visual appeal and dynamic compositions compared to even numbers. Dubbed the 'rule of three', this can make a space feel more natural, balanced and finished versus sticking to even numbers.

Tip: Group plants with similar light and watering needs so you can care for them all in one go, and match plain pots with textured pots. Vertical ribs like those seen on PerkyPod below are all the most popular style right now that's extremely timeless!

3. Creative Urban Gardening

As Australian societies migrate to higher density, city living over the long term, it is becoming increasingly necessary to transform tight spaces into lush, creative gardening solutions. Stakes, vertical trellises and 'grow-your-own' zones on balconies all help to squeeze in as much greenery as possible.

Every little bit helps you play your part in improving the biodiversity of Australian cities. Plant balcony pots with flowers to attract bees, and reduce your carbon miles by planting your own herbs, fruit and vegetables.

Tip: Hydroponics are great for soil free solutions (just add water and liquid plant food, such as this option from Mr Stacky). However, if aesthetics and a realistic budget are important, PerkyPod is a solution that still allows you to go traditionally with dirt and compost. While it may seem like a normal pot, PerkyPod's integrated features prevent messes while still looking stylish. Plus, its wheels allow you to chase the sun for optimal plant growth. No more worry about tile stains, mopping up leaks or being sin-binned by Body Corporate with water spilling onto lower levels, all thanks to our genius drainage and water catchment system.

4. Water-Wise Gardening is Must

Conservation of water is at the forefront of international garden design, with sustainable gardening practices now considered essential. At this year's Melbourne International Flower and Gardening Show, plenty of eco-friendly ideas were on display, such as drought-resistant plants, advanced irrigation systems and water recycling solutions.

Tip: Pots with superior drainage capabilities help to eliminate wastage of not just water but also precious fertiliser while maintaining a stylish look. As evidenced by becoming a Winner of the 2024 Good Design Award and a Finalist in the 2024 Finder Product Innovation Awards, PerkyPod is leading the way in innovative pot design, though it's not yet available international (Aussies are the only lucky ones with access!).
